“Education Is Not the Filling of a Pail, But the Lighting of a Fire”William Butler Yeats

Dear Parents, Friends and Staff

With two weeks to go until the end of term, the school remains on track and focused. The extra mural programs are well supported and the academic commitment continues to be a priority.

As part of a long term strategy we are looking at ways of making the school more effective and more efficient. We will keep you informed as to how we approach these issues.

I have been reflecting on the mission of our school and the subtle message which lies between the lines of our mission statement blur our purpose at times. Our focus is as always, to provide each child with new challenges that will result in a rewarding school experience and prepare them for life after school along with a sound academic foundation. Our focus remains to create Employers rather than employees and for this, we need to develop a number of competencies, which include spontaneous problem solving, calculated risk taking and effective communication along with an entrepreneurial bias to our educational outcomes.

We want your child to be happy and successful at MECS, and you play a key role in this process and that is  to continually show interest in, and to support, your child. A child who knows his or her family is interested in and supports school programs and staff, will usually enjoy greater success, and will have fewer problems in school.

I continue to be inspired by the dedicated staff and families in this community and believe that together we have a future that is full of hope and optimism

Saturday Sport

We are sending a number of soccer, netball teams as well as a debating team through to participate in an inter-schools sports meeting at Eagles Nest in Polokwane on Saturday. We wish these participants all the very best of luck.

Collection of Learners after school It is alarming as to the increase in reports of young children who are being abducted off the streets of our towns and cities. I urge parents to make sure that your children are safe. Lately we have had learners left alone at the school until after 6pm. This practice must stop as it is unsafe and unfair on the leaners and on our staff who often have make arrangements for late collections

The future is bright for MASE Debate Team…
Mokopane English Combined School Junior Debate team recently took part in a friendly debate contest against Mokopane Primary School on the 27th of February 2019. The team was composed of grade 8 & 9 learners. The outcome of the debate went overwhelmingly in favour of MASE team. The speakers were so brilliant, they made light work of their opponents. Many of the attendees who watched the MASE speakers debating agreed the standard of the team was very high and believe, the team can hold their own against some of the debate powerhouse schools. The coaches admitted that plans are in place to expand the debate club in the senior phase as well.

Mokopane English Combined School grade 11 and 12 learners attended the Craig Higginson Tour hosted by Cornwall Hill College on the 28th of February 2019. Craig Higginson is the author of the set work book ‘Dream House’ novel for IEB English Home Language. The learners enjoyed the presentation so much as they got a chance to ask questions about the book directly from the author. We are certain that our students are now better equipped to tackle any Dream House question thrown their way
Congratulations to Lesedi Mashishi (grade 6), who made it through the first & second round of Netball – Limpopo Trials. Well done Lesedi, we are so proud of you. She is competing in round three on3 April 2019. With her is Miss Retha Smith (Netball coach) . Thank you for your hard work and dedication to the students.

The following High Schools students will play on the 13th of March in Modimolle. Kgothatso Ledwaba, Neo Mokwena, Kea Mogale, Dimpho Mokhonoana, Keorapetse Mokonyama, Dimakatso Setseta and Ester Mogotlhwa. We wish them all the best of luck!

The “Green Finger” project is something that we are doing to help the children appreciate plants and gardening. It takes responsibility, to create a beautiful garden and then to keep it looking beautiful and growing. This also contributes to the schools image and the children are helping the teachers to make our school look very beautiful. The next time parents admire our stunning garden, remember that your child helped the teachers to create it.
The learner newspaper was in need of a name.  Learners were encouraged, to enter the name competition.  Then every learner in the school had the opportunity to vote for the best name.  Tshegofatso Mathetsa’s entry was the one who received the most votes. ” What’s up MECS?”  Well done Tshegofatso you are now part of the school’s history.
