Possession and/or using vapes on the school premises.

15 February 2023

Dear Parents,

I am writing to inform you of a concerning issue that has become increasingly prevalent among high school students: vaping.

Vaping, or the use of electronic cigarettes, poses a serious health risk to young people. Studies have shown that the nicotine and other chemicals in vaping products can have detrimental effects on the developing brains and bodies of adolescents. Additionally, the use of e-cigarettes has been linked to an increased risk of addiction to other substances, such as traditional cigarettes.

I want to make it clear that our school has a zero-tolerance policy when it comes to vaping. Any learner caught in possession and/or using vapes on the school premises, will be dealt with in the same manner as bringing an illegal substance to school. Any learner caught with vape apparatus or found vaping will face immediate disciplinary action, including a minimum three-day suspension from school and exclusion from formal school sport and cultural events for a full calendar month. The learner may be allowed to write formal tests and examinations and leave directly thereafter. Further infringements will result in even more severe sanctions.  For further information consult the substance abuse policy on the school website.

I urge you to have an open and honest conversation with your child about the dangers of vaping and to discourage them from engaging in this harmful behaviour. I also ask that you help us reinforce the importance of abiding by the school’s policies and rules.

Please sign and return the acknowledgement below. Thank you for your cooperation in keeping our students safe and healthy.

Sincerely,

Brian Dawson

Principal
